Canister Vacuum Advantages

Noise Level

Vacuum cleaners are loud, whatever style you choose. The average model puts out about 70 decibels of noise – comparable to the loudness of a flushing toilet. Canister vacuums tend to be quieter – approximately 60 to 65 decibels.

The quietest upright vacuums operate at about 70 decibels. A few decibels may not seem to make much of a difference, but the decibel scale is logarithmic. For instance, 73 decibels are twice as loud as 70 decibels and half as loud as 76 decibels. So, if you or anyone in your home is sensitive to noise, a canister vacuum is an obvious choice.

Weight and Maneuverability

Canister vacuums tend to be a bit lighter than uprights. It may only be a difference of a few pounds but the design of canister vacuums makes them feel much lighter. Instead of pushing and pulling the full device across the floor, the majority of a canister vacuum is stationary while you use the lightweight wand and the attached head to clean.

The difference is quite apparent when vacuuming stairs and tight spaces. For the most lightweight option, consider a handheld or stick vacuum model.

Manageable, Retractable Cords

Most canister vacuums have retractable cords that hide inside the canister when not in use. This offers a cleaner appearance and less chance of tripping over the cord.

Suction Power

Canister vacuums tend to have greater suction power than uprights, making them better suited for cleaning bare floors. They’re also efficient at cleaning carpets. However, upright vacuums using collection bags are generally more effective for carpet cleaning.

“I love my refurbished Electrolux. Quality vacuum at an amazing price. It smells clean and fresh and works well. Great deal.”
